How Does Damp Affect My Property?
Damp can lead to a large range of issues for both the property and the people who spend a lot of their time in it. It is important to have damp seen to as soon as you can; the longer you have the damp problem the more likely it is to have a detrimental impact.
When walls are damp it greatly reduces their ability to effectively insulate the building. This means that it will take more energy – and therefore money – to heat your home. Damp can also spread into the woodwork and plaster of the property, so you may notice crumbling plaster work or the onset of timber decay and infestation. When damp takes hold in your property, all surrounding material will begin to absorb the moisture. This includes floors and timber beams, which can lead to wet rot and dry rot, if left untreated.
Damp properties provide the ideal environment for fungal microbes to thrive, which can lead to mould on your walls and ceilings. Black mould in particular can be seriously damaging to your health, especially those who are more vulnerable such as children, adolescents, elderly people and those with existing health conditions. Black mould can aggravate breathing conditions such as asthma and other respiratory problems, while also affecting your immune system to increase your likelihood of developing other illnesses.
Types of Damp
Rising
Rising describes the variation of damp where moisture enters the walls from the ground and rises up via capillary action. Beginning in the lower wall, the damp is drawn up through any cracks or pores in the material. This is then absorbed by the brick and plaster which spreads the damp throughout the wall.
Penetrating
Penetrating damp is when moisture is absorbed into the walls from the surrounding area rather than from the ground below. Most commonly this is seen in basements and cellars due to the fact the room is surrounded by earth (earth-retaining walls). It can, however, sometimes occur above-ground and spread damp around the walls.

FAQs
How much does damp proofing Doncaster cost?
When it comes to damp proofing, price varies greatly. This is because there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to the problem as every job and solution is different depending on the needs of the property. The extent of the damage, the size of your property and treatment used will impact the overall price you pay for the service. In order to get an accurate quote and ensure any damp issue is properly diagnosed, it is important to get a professional to survey your property. At Allerton Damp Proofing we offer completely free surveys, giving you an accurate quote before undertaking any work. With Allerton there are never any hidden costs.
How long does damp proofing Doncaster take?
How long damp proofing Doncaster takes is dependent on the size of the project. A small damp issue can take as little as 2-5 days, whereas a larger problem could take longer than this. A wall also needs time to dry once the work is completed to ensure that the damp proofing job is as effective as it can be. When you get a free damp survey, our experts will be able to provide you with an approximate time frame along with the price.
