Causes of damp
Rising damp is one of two types of damp that can damage homes and buildings. This is the most common and widely known form of damp and is caused by moisture moving up from below a wall, usually from the ground. Water that naturally occurs in the ground is pulled upwards into the building’s bricks and material through capillary action, soaking into the walls and damaging both the structure and the faces of the walls (for instance, your decor). Once the water is in the wall, it then spreads further, transferring through the brickwork and causing more damage.
It is, therefore, vital that damp is treated as soon as you notice it. Ignoring the problem can not only lead to further damage that is more expensive to repair, but can also impact the health of your family. It is widely known that damp can aggravate, or even cause, respiratory problems such as asthma. It also increases the likelihood of your property developing mould, which also impacts your health.
If you notice rising damp in your Huddersfield home, talk to us. We have been damp proofing Huddersfield since 1983 and our CSRT Surveyors can identify the cause of rising damp, recommend the best treatment, and eradicate damp and its associated problems from your home. We have technicians, PCAQ qualified, that can also complete associated damp proofing works, such as dealing with woodworm or condensation problems.
Penetrating damp is the second type of water damage that affects homes in Huddersfield. It is as bad for your property and health as rising damp. Penetrating damp occurs when moisture is drawn into the wall from sources surrounding the wall, rather than from the ground below. For example, earth retaining walls, such as in your basement or cellar, are surrounded by damp ground on all sides, meaning that water can enter the brickwork at any height. It is largely drawn across the material rather than up. It can also be caused by leaking guttering, cracked render or brickwork, or even broken window sills.
Through capillary action, the water moves from the external face of the wall into the material and onto the internal face. This is the stage at which you will be able to see its effects. If the room is going to be used for any purpose, from occupation to storage, the damp must be dealt with immediately in order to prevent problems with the structure of your building, the health of the occupants and to prevent the rotting of any items in the room.
If you have a home or property in Huddersfield, our CSRT surveyors can visit you, identify the cause of your damp problem and recommend the perfect treatment. Get in touch with us today.

How much does damp proofing cost?
There is no ‘one price fits all’ with damp proofing Huddersfield as it varies according to the extent of the damage, the size of your property and the other unique requirements of your building. This is why it’s always important to have an expert survey your property so you can receive an accurate quote that reflects the work that will be undertaken. At Allerton Damp Proofing, we never have any hidden costs to ensure you get the best work.
How long does damp proofing take?
The time it takes to complete damp proofing work varies on the size of the project. Generally speaking, a small project can take as little as 2-5 days. Once the wall is plastered, it also requires further drying time to ensure that the damp proofing work is as effective as it can be. When one of our experts surveys your property, they’ll be able to give an approximate time frame.
